What to Do in Each Season

Spring: To care for your lawn, fertilize as soon as the snow melts, repair any dead patches, and dethatch and aerate weak lawns to revive them. To care for trees and shrubs, remove old mulch and remulch the base of trees and shrubs, prune any dead or diseased branches as well as flowering shrubs, remove dead shrubs and groundcovers, and thoroughly water any new plants. To care for a garden,  add organic matter to soil, plant cool-season vegetables and flowers, cut back yellow foliage, prune any vines covering arbors and trellises, and replace old mulch.
Summer: To care for your lawn, mow regularly and only remove about 1/3 of the blade, mow higher during hot weeks to protect the lawn from drought and heat, don't use the same mowing pattern each time or it may create strips and ruts, and water deeply as needed. To care for trees and shrubs, water new shrubs and trees weekly and be sure to moisten the soil 1 foot deep, add mulch and keep material 2 inches away from tree trunks, check for insects and disease on a regular basis, trim hedges, and prune fades flowers. To care for a garden, mulch beds when needed, harvest vegetables and fruits when they are ready, cut flowers and herbs in the morning, prune and replant as necessary, ensure water containers are not empty, be sure to fertilize flowers and vegetables every month, and remove dead flower heads for fall.
Fall: To care for your lawn, overseed spots that need refreshing as well as new lawn, use fertilizer specific to fall care, and rake and compost leaves when reasonable. To care for trees and shrubs, mulch and water new coniferous trees, and clean fallen crops and leaves from trees. To care for a garden, cut back any perennials to half a foot above the soil, harvest all vegetables before any frost occurs and compost the vegetable garden, and divide and replant overcrowded perennials.
Winter: To care for your lawn, avoid exposing any grass to the air and wind as snow acts as insulation, use sand or kitty litter as opposed to salt if your path is icy, and don't fertilize dormant grass. To care for trees and shrubs, wrap trees and tender foundation shrubs with burlap on the appropriate sides to prevent damage (leaving the top open), brush off branches full of snow if the snow is not frozen, and prune fruit trees and spray with dormant oil just before freezing temperatures set in. To care for a garden, discard wintering bulbs that are soft or rotten.
